Hrrmph. I'll hope for the best, but I'm not optimistic.

          • Big 3 Failure:

A huge amount highly skilled manufacturing labour becomes available.

A large amount of pretend welfare becomes real welfare.

A huge amount of plant and supplier relationships become available for new players at low prices.

A huge amounts of ridiculous contractual arrangements (i.e. with dealerships on a state by state (and in Canada) basis, unions, pensioners, etc) either disappears or becomes the local responsibility it always should've been.

It seems to me that the failure of the big three would set the stage for a major industrial recovery in America, eventually.

It would certainly create a real motivation for the 'Average American' to take a real interest in international governance, wages, and regulation.....I seem to recall ancient conversations with Imran in the 2001 World Government? thread about this...

I just wish we could hear from Roland about now....

I think you have me confused with Agathon, sir. I am a proud American. I am also not a communist, which is why I'm against bailouts like this.

Maybe if I write a letter to my Senator, he can send me the $50 that is my share of this bailout, and I can use it to buy a car myself?

I thought you were opposed to the idea of filibustering?

GM claims that if it doesn't get 4 bill by the end of the month it'll have to declare bankruptcy.

So all they have to do is hold off for 3 weeks.

The Dem leadership appears to be trying to ram this through without a proper debate; indeed without even a proper reading. There isn't even an agreement between the White House and the Dem leadership on the text -- merely an "agreement on concept," whatever that means.

I doubt the rank-and-file senators will go along with this hastiness, but you never know.

It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Ah, okay. So when Republicans filibuster then, you're perfectly fine with the whole thing. But when Democrats filibuster it's an outrage.

                            • We are several steps away from a filibuster. It may not even be a partisan issue. Even a hand count of votes on the draft hasn't been done yet, as far as I know. Let the process play out.

                              • Looks like GMAC, GM's financing arm, may file bankruptcy before the end of the year, as its conversion to a bank is not meeting the requirements.
