    Colossus to rise again

TWENTY-THREE centuries after craftsmen carved the legendary statue that has inspired legions of painters, poets, playwrights and politicians, a new Colossus of Rhodes is about to be born.

Like the original, the new Colossus will adorn an outer pier in the harbour area of Rhodes and will be visible to passing ships. But it will be much taller and bigger than the ancient Colossus, which stood 34 metres high before an earthquake toppled it in 226BC.

The German artist Gert Hof has conceived the new work as a light sculpture that will allow visitors to inspect it by day and enjoy - through light shows - the stories it will "tell" by night.

"We are talking about a highly, highly innovative light sculpture, one that will stand between 60 metres and 100 metres tall so people can physically enter it," Dr Dimitris Koutoulas, who is heading the project in Greece, says.

"Although we are still at the drawing board stage, Gert Hof's plan is to make it the world's largest light installation, a structure that has never before been seen anywhere in the world."

The work is expected to cost up to $390 million.

    That will be cool.

If it's not made of bronze, it isn't the Colossus.

Does that mean they don't get the bonus to trade?

No, but it does mean that in Civ5 you can rebuild destroyed wonders.

Bollocks. It will just be built much faster with access to copper. Of course, without the copper bonus, the opportunity cost may be such that it never gets built (assuming an all-human MP setup, since otherwise some silly AI with a single fishing village in the tundra will eventually build it, cost be damned), so I guess I can see that angle.

We'll have to abandon Flight for it to be useful.

ok , i knew there was no way in hell the greek goverment was paying for this
The work will cost up to €200 million ($254 million), according to the Vima newspaper. International organizations led by the World Trade Center Association, a group of exporters that promotes peace through trade, have offered financial assistance

so it IS actually about trade

now all that will be left to be done on rhodes will be to kick the drunk brits out of the island and get some decent tourists

Are you sure that's wise ? With decent tourists you have to sell the real stuff instead of that homebrewn goatpiss with fake labels you scam the brits with currently ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

So, more accurately: "German artist to build funky modern-art thingy in roughly same location as Colossus of Rhodes." Perhaps a similar gambit could work for Iran: "We are rebuilding lost masterpieces of ancient Persian architecture. To give it a more modern twist, we're building them in a different size and shape, with uranium cores and steel shells. What do you have against our culture?"
