They were played on - but never realised. Star Fleet never had a point-to-point transporter, but rather a transporter-to-tranporter ...ehhr... transporter. Whenever they stepped on that platform they were secretely beamed into a film-studio - hence the fake rock (it was, after all, also a beaming platform, and they had to put the tech for it somewhere). You know, that trick has tradition...

Same with Holo-deck BTW - sometimes it makes for a terrible effort to keep the crew happy. But you cant let them know it´s all real, cause then they wouldnt be able to enjoy the hookers so much... A happy crew is very important for the success of the mission...

Incidentally, that directive was issued the same year, that Hollywood was rebuilt after the eugenic wars (which, of course, had started there). Wait ! Incident ? Well, you decide...

I once read an essay somewhere online pointing out that everyone criticizing the scientific accuracy of Star Trek is misguided; large as the scientific errors are, they pale in comparison to the terrible incompetence of Star Trek engineering. Redundancy, simplicity, failsafes, kill-switches--the advanced engineers of the future haven't heard of a single one of 'em. The essay was by an engineer who, after watching the series, concluded that Starfleet engineering specifically designed the Enterprise to kill all its passengers.

Indeed. Even though the Technical Manual books they sell suggest that there are all of those redundancies and backups in place, it's clear that none of them work.

That's Socialist engineering for you. What with the Federation not having money anymore...

Just another example of people taking this WAY WAY TOO seriously. It was a darn TV SHOW FROM THE 60's.
If everything always works, half their plots would fall apart. The engineering was obviously not important and only mentioned when Scotty or Spock needed to fill in a few empty minutes and it played a part of the plot.

It's comments like that that make me really whant this new movie to be a reboot just so we can listen to the fanboys whine like stuck pigs. IT"S ENTERTAINMENT, not HISTORY.

What's your favorite episode?

While I'll admit "Amok Time" isn't the best, it has a soft spot in my heart because that's one of the first ones I remember seeing.
