  • Bush & Obama

Why is it when Bush is about to leave office that he becomes a gracious and classy person to his Democratic rivals? All that I've read seems to indicate that Bush has been more than open and welcoming to Obama; informing his advisers about the national security threats very early in the process, months prior to the election and now a mere week after the election has him to the WH. I just read that he invited Obama to a G-20 summit, which Obama declined (but sent a team) because he said there should only be one President at it.

So, what's with this bipartisanship?! It can't just be because of legacy (in that case, he'd be friendly to the other side 2 years ago).
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
    - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

They aren't very different. They just act like it during election time. They purposefully make insignificant differences to their platforms and then make them seem like huge differences.

Bush has always seemed liked a gracious and classy guy. His underlings are the ones who did all the rough stuff. The same dynamic exists with Obama and his staff.

Well, I sort of have to agree that Bush always seemed like a fine guy to me at a personal level. I remember when he personally intervened when a tussle broke out between US and Chilean security personel at a meeting in Chile.

The fact is that Bush is a friendly and gracious person. The hatred towards him is purely politically. He is a Republican so he has to represent everything that is evil if you are a Democrat especially during an election season.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Ah no. The hatred towards him has to do with his polical actions, not how diplomatic he is.

He can be a ****ing evil moron destroying the very fabric of the world and still be polite and gracious.

For a sitting governor to mock a death-row inmate's appeal for clemency with such disdain hardly strikes me as gracious or classy.

He's probably trying to set a precedent counter to the childish unhelpfulness of the Clinton administration last go around.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It's interesting that Bush actually has nothing but nice things to say about Clinton.

And it is incumbent upon elected officials to show more Humanity than those we've sentenced to death. Don't get me wrong, death row conversions are about the least believable things EVAH, but that is irrelevant to then-Gov. Bush's behavior.

Yeah, because showing actual graciousness and class would totally undermine whatever the hell point you were trying to make about Bush's graciousness and class.
