  • K-19 all over again?

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- An accident aboard a nuclear-powered Russian navy submarine doing a test run in the Pacific Ocean killed more than 20 people Sunday, the navy said.

The nuclear reactor aboard the submarine was operating normally and radiation levels were normal, navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said.

The accident occurred when a fire-extinguishing system went into operation in error aboard the submarine, Dygalo said. He said the dead included sailors and shipbuilders.

The submarine was heading back to shore on its own power, and 21 people injured in the accident were evacuated to a ship that was escorting the sub.

Russia's navy has been plagued by deadly accidents, including the explosions that sank the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk in 2000, killing all 118 seamen aboard.

Sunday's accident came as the Kremlin seeks to restore Russia's naval reputation. A naval squadron is headed to Venezuela for joint exercises this month in a show of force near U.S. shores.

    Sad for those involved

Oh man, that's like straight from my nightmares. Now, I'm not saying being in Navy is gay (and aside from that fact), I find it extremely disturbing being locked in a tube that is under water for a long time. I imagine if someone screws up badly, I might end up paying for it and while this is true in all cases, on land I still have my legs. I'll take my 0.001% chances of just running for it at the end rather than 0%. SO yeah, a nightmare scenario would include being in a sub that is going down. That just sucks.

I wonder what really happened in there though. I guess they'll let us know later on.

As to the meat of the article, very sad. It doesn't sound like a reactor accident, it would be very hard to find a way to kill 20 people that fast via radiation the way those things are shielded. I am going to go with either 1.) steam leak or 2.) hull breach of some sort.

Yeah, I agree Patroklos, not chomping down on that radiation storyline

I agree what you said or other catastrophic failure.

NO WAY, would I be on a submarine. Very slight, oh so slight, chance I'd be on a ship in the ocean.

Well, they're saying fire extinguishing system kicked in and sucked all the oxygen-rich air out of the compartments. Those who were slow enough to grab their personal breathing units died of CO2 poisoning.

Sad indeed. Just curious, they say here the sub is named 'Nerpa' - what does that mean (or is it a name of someone)?

Nerpa is a species of a seal.

Rumor has it the sub was destined for India. I wonder how many Indian sailors, if any, were on board. I bet this doesn't instill confidence in Russian workmanship...
