Solver is right, with a lightning quick response. The bulbs have some alcohol in them, and they are lit on fire and then placed against the skin to create a vacuum. As the oxygen depletes, the cups suck blood to the surface of the skin, causing temporary bruising.

I've had this done but I didn't feel magically better or more relaxed from it. But then again my body doesn't deal well with normal relaxation therapy, like massages. The doctors all say I squirm around too much like a fish.
