Unimatrix got it right, it's an X ray diffraction slide of DNA, by R. Franklin. It is a pity she never got a nobel prize, but hey, not that she'd care where ever she is now.

It looks like a picture from an electron microscope, not in false colour, so using a heavy metal stain. Transmission electron microscope...so that object could be something in the region of 1nm and larger, so suggests that it is a bacterium, or part of a eukaryotic cell if it is from a TEM. I don't think that is a flagellum, so I doubt it is a bacterium, but I can't think of a part of a cell that looks like that, so I reckon I'm on the wrong track entirely.

I was thinking of that, but the background seems too uniform for a fossil. Though I'm probably wrong.

Lots of filters. I have no idea what I used, I just tried it out through trial and error.
