I think your read is terribly wrong. She's nothing but a fairly junior member of the Democratic Senatorial caucus now.

Firstly, her Senate position was never terribly prominent. The only power she held was as a potential future President. Now she doesn't have that status any more. She's done. If she manages to stick around for another 15 years then through seniority she might manage to carve out a niche for herself, but as it stands today she's got very little to offer anybody in the Senate.

One must merely see the reaction of her Senate collegues when she returned after her campaign. She's going to be a HUGE voice... especially since she has shown she can work across the aisle. And has turned into a sort of feminist icon (one need simply read all things feminists wrote about her after the primaries going towards today).

And Obama isn't going to ignore her. Hell, he may prefer working with her than with Reid.

Dude, that was her 15 minutes. She's got nada. The Senate's not going to deliberately marginalize her, but she's got no claim on anything more than her seniority entitles her to.

What Clinton has going for her isn't clout in the Senate (which is based on seniority), but a large grassroots base of older, white women. And Obama owes her a few favors. So Cabinet (such as HHS) would be more likely than Majority Leader.

A Cabinet level position would be the worst thing he could do. She's an incompetent. She has spectacularly failed both times she had administrative responsibility.

Yep. Her 'base' though makes her a bit of a player. And you know that Obama will allow her to take a bit of a lead on passing a health care plan.

I don't see why Hillary would want as Cabinet seat. She gets more exposure as a NY Senator.

Personally, I would keep Gates at Defense, but I doubt Obama will do so.
