The father is the medical director of emergency medicine at Johnson Memorial Hospital, in Stafford Springs, Conn.

He should be fired. Good ER docs know that you do not let children near guns, period.

Dad should have at least had his hands around the boy's hands, both of them, to help him steady the weapon. I'm not sure about the Uzi, but on many automtic weapons it's possible to select single shot or short bursts. Single shot would have been better.

Each bullet weighs about 1/2 ounce, and leaves the barrel at about 900 fps, so the recoil of each bullet is about 25 - 30 foot-pounds/second. An Uzi will fire more than 10 rounds in a second. That gives you an idea of what the effect of firing such a weapon would have on a 60 pound child.

That being said, when I was a few years older than the boy I fired a 30.06 rifle with no problem. The recoil from a single shot would have been 2 to 3 times more.

I'm glad I got rid of my gun. I don't go anywhere near them, period. My son knows that if he sees a gun he should get far away from it fast.

Yes, you're right, it's ".30-'06".

I actually enjoyed the solid kick of the rifle against my shoulder, but I wasn't yet a teen. What's wrong with those Texans? Do they need wrist exercises?
