Isn't Russia disappearing demographically, despite Happy Putin's policy efforts to reverse that trend? (Last I had heard they were...meh...sortakinda working in that the rate of decline had slowed some, but growth is still negative, with a significantly higher death rate than comparable nations in Europe).

I dunno...it's not something I follow all that closely...

(Mayhaps this is the "engineered crisis" that Biden spoke of....)

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

The most politically significant portion of Biden's remarks came when he admitted that the decisions of an Obama-Biden administration were likely to be deeply unpopular...Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound."
The last few days, Obama has been telling the crowds that because of these tough time, they're going to have to sacrifice. Promising tough times and sacrifice in election speechs?? That's not a popular thing to do.

A cunning politician would be touting tax cuts leading to a balanced budget by the end of his first term.

Come now, given the average knowledge level of the American citizen (including most certainly myself,) this is just a statement of obvious fact, not some sinister glimpse of evil.

The rest of the article? Joe Biden running his mouth til he sounds stupid. What else is new?

What Ramo, Arrian and the article author said.

Even if Obama wanted to change policy, it could only be achieved peacemeal, step by step turning in another direction.

Problem here is that it would involve dismantling the incredible power of the military and its retired top dogs, having been apopinted in the executive board of work of weapons manufacturers. They act as middle men between government and these companies, and its in their interest to keep the US militarized. After all, you can't put millions of people out of work right.

It's an illusion to think one man can change a policy that's been pervading government for decades. Obama could play the multilateral card a bit more often, and that would soften us Europussies enough to become US 'friends' again. At least it would be a step in the right direction. In the end we still prefer the lesser evil, right?

At least he's honest about it. I don't consider this a gaffe.

Your country is finished as a democracy, and has been for a long time. Voting only legitimizes this cluster****.

Wait a sec-did you want to restrict voting rights on political lines? Or was that only Agathon and Kid? Cos I would argue that at least 2 of the 3 communists on this board 'Hate Democracy', to use that wonderful phrase. Of course I have no idea if that's indicative of all or most American communists. Maybe they're the exception to the rule.

I don't particularly hate it. I'm just not naive enough to believe that it works. I know we're supposed to automatically say that it is the greatest and so on and be grateful for our "freedom", but if you believe that voting makes much of a difference, I have a bridge to sell you.

The truth is that the Emperor has no clothes. The people in charge of our societies have absolutely no idea what they are doing, and they are desperately trying to hide this fact from the populace in order to maintain the "illusion of control" as it is called.

You'd have had to have been living under a rock for the past decade not to notice that.

...Biden reminds me a bit about LBJ- not a very good person, a successful politician, a leader who's likely to lead the US into war if he ever needs to "take over from Obama"... basically he's the Democrats' version of Dick Cheney.

This is the mentality that scares me. Obama will have to prove himself to the mainstream populace and conservatives, and as soon as a situation arises he'll use all the force he can to not seem "weak on terror." The conservatives have set up the parameters for the discourse once again, and the democrats (equally conservative on just about everything) will play within these parameters since they don't actually stand for anything.
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau
