  • I just got polled

The questions were flying, I was thinking fast! Doing great! Then all of a sudden I got bogged down in the mire of my union views conflicting with my conservative outlook.

Do I support Gordon Smith or this Merkley fellow?

Gordon Smith (R) supports hidden ballots. If ballots are not hidden then management will know and target those that support the unions, yes? So good for Gordon keeping that secret, right?

Merkley (D) on the other hand wants the doing away with secret ballots and some other system (not secret) which, the poller says, "will make it easier for unions to turn businesses union". Well huh?

So I couldn't answer. I don't know what's better for unions, the Gordon Smith support of secret ballots or the Merkley mystery plan.

    Anybody? Z? Help!!!

Btw, your CNN/MTV poll might be a little funny this evening.

The way the things work now is that union organizers gather cards signed by various employees indicating their interest in a union. Once 50+% is reached, a secret-ballot vote is held to determine whether or not the union may represent the workers.

The unions want to change things, saying that once they've gather the 50+% cards, the union should be able to represent the workerss, and that having an election is just a dublicative and expensive expending of efforts.

Management claims that some employees are intimidated by union organizers into signing the cards of interest and that therefore a secret-ballot election is needed to make sure the workers really want a union.

Well that sounds reasonable. Intimidation is a wrong thing. So Smith is correct?

I don't see it as a really big thing, either way.

I doubt if there's any intimination going on. I haven't see or heard of any.

Once the union can find 50+% of workers are who are willing to sign cards, getting a vote of 50+% should be pretty easy. I imagine a few people will have changed their minds but not enough to make a difference.

You know what bugged me about that poll? The guy asked to speak to the youngest male household member of voting age. That kinda bugged me. His last question was how old I am presented as an age group, 45-55, etc. When he started ot 18-25, I just flat out told him that I'm 50. Still he had to go through ALL the age groups. /

I'm just glad this wasn't a thread to tell us you got a job as a pole dancer. The thought of you in your skivvies, spinning around an aluminum pole is not one I want to contemplate.

Telephone interviewers are required to ask the questions word for word, and are marked down for not doing so ... even when it's obvious, as you say, they still are required to read the entire response set. Quality control and all that.

That's pretty much what I figured. Doesn't make it any less bothersome when you just told the guy how old you are and he keeps asking. Must be a bother for him too.

Does this include out-of-house workers ? You know, like people who are building up lumber camps, mines, roads and such, or those who are out scouting ? Or are those just expected to always be against unions ?

(You know, what this is aiming at, right ?)
