Bachmann on TV questions Obama's patriotism

The congresswoman says she's also concerned that others in Congress may share "anti-American views."

    Last update: October 18, 2008 - 8:00 AM

Defending the McCain campaign's automated phone calls attacking Barack Obama's judgment and character, Rep. Michele Bachmann on Friday said Obama "may have anti-American views" and called for a news media "exposé" of the views of members of Congress.

Bachmann's comments came in a 13-minute interview on MSNBC, during which she asserted that Obama has a close connection to 1960s radical William Ayers, a theme of the phone calls and recent remarks by McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin.

"Barack Obama didn't have a mild association with Bill Ayers," Bachmann, a Republican, said. "He had a very strong association with Bill Ayers."

Later, when asked by Chris Matthews whether she believes that Obama may have anti-American views, Bachmann replied, "Absolutely. I'm very concerned that he may have anti-American views."

Bachmann also said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, both Democrats, have "far-leftist views." When asked whether she considered members of Congress anti-American, she said, "The news media should do a penetrating exposé and take a look. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out are they pro-America or anti-America."

On Friday, Bachmann's DFL opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, said Bachmann's comments "undermines our political process. Instead of being able to disagree respectfully, it turns it into this kind of vilification. You're just not disagreeing. The other person is un-American."

But a spokeswoman for Bachmann denied that the congresswoman had portrayed all liberals as anti-American.

The controversy arose on a day when Palin was quoted by Time magazine online saying, "I don't question at all Barack Obama's love for the great country."
DKos says the Democratic candidate running against her, Elwn Tinklenberg, had raised $2,500 through ActBlue before the event. At the time I'm writing this, about a day after the interview took place, it's over $165,000. Nothing compared to Bachmann's warchest, but it's quite an impressive response either way.

Incidentally, I don't get this whole "un-American" thing. I mean, how insecure do you have to be to worry about the patriotism of a major party's presidential candidate? And how much cynicism does it take to abuse that feeling? I'll be honest and say I don't really know what would happen in Finnish politics if one candidate in an election explicitly called another anti-Finnish... though we do have a nationalist "True Finns" party that has five out of the 200 parliament seats, so the answer wouldn't be the "they'd get laughed out of every position they have" that I wish it were.

(further incidentally, is there actually a difference between "un-American" and "anti-American"? It seems to me that they just get used completely interchangeably. Not that that means much in the language that came up with "thaw" and "unthaw", but it does call to my mind a binary worldview where both are just synonyms for "evil")

I love how Tweety kept pushing her along that route and the dumb broad just kept digging herself in deeper. Bachmann has always been an unpleasant person, but this takes the cake. I especially love how after the interview, even Pat Buchanan had to shake his head at the crazy.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

Why would we need to do a "penetrating exposé" to figure this out. It's a well known fact that Congress is anti-American.

Among the chief reasons I have personally heard people to be against Obama is that he is anti-american or that they aren't sure he is american.

Well, in the view of people who levy charges of "un-American" and "anti-American" they do just pretty much mean "evil." I would think there is a theoretical difference. Supporting regimes that use un-lawful wire taps and incarcerations in foreign countries being (theoretically) "un" but not "anti" American, whereas supporting a regime with those qualities within America would be "anti" but certainly not "un" American. However, the fact that they are used interchangeably means the difference is pretty moot.

And the reason these sort of charges can be leveled in America is because there are different groups with different ideas of what America is, and what it means to be American. Since the groups have different conceptualizations of what America is, a member of one group can call members of another group "un-American" and the other members of the caller's group will agree.

                Bachmann (R-inc) 42
                Tinklenberg (D) 38

And that was from the two-three-four days before she made the news with her fascist rhetoric.

                Two Months ago:

                Bachmann (R-inc) 40
                Tinklenberg (D) 27

Those, incidentally, are the only two polls conducted in the race all year.

I watched that, to be fair she was pushed along by Chris Matthews to make that statement. OTOH, by "pushed" he kept asking the obvious follow-up questions to her attempts to stick to her talking points. I don't know if she really meant her McCarthyesque statement but she didn't come across as particularly bright... she paused after every question asked by Matthews as if she was thinking, "How can I spin this back to my talking point?"

That's a run of the mill tactic. Didn't you know that if you aren't a Republican then you're anti-American? Sarah Palin loves that sort of rhetoric too saying she loves visiting the "pro-America parts of America"; I.E. red states.

John McCain visited southern Virginia today. Which his PR person called "Real Virginia". That's right...there's actually a half of the State of Virginia that is "Fake Virginia".

Elwn Tinklenberg has reported that he has raised just shy of a half million since his opponent appeared on Meet the Press, the DCCC smells blood and is also expected to contribute. I think this one will go to the democrat and will be go down in history as a one of the greatest self-pwning of this election cycle.
