But it isn't an addiction to refined sugars, because it isn't the same with cookies/etc. So I am fine with it.

I made some beef kebabs for dinner tonight, with a Morrocan spice rub. Buy the chopped up beef with the label "Beef for Stew" in your local supermarket, and save a good deal of cash (and time).

Galnemer loves 'em, and I love to cook, so it all works out.

            You still with the librarian?

Yup. After much agonizing, she decided to take my name. Thus, she is now no longer the Libertarian Librarian. She is Galnemer.

                  Family of 4:

                  DINNER:

Shrimp Tacos, refried beans and salad.

1.5 lb of shrimp (on sale) - $9.00
                  1 package of cheese food - $1.00
Homemade salsa (large can of tomatoes, cilantro, onions, garlic, jalepenos, spices) about $2.00
                  1 package of Tortillas - $1.00
                  Homemade refried beans - $1.00
                  1 Green Pepper - $0.70
                  1 Head of Lettuce - $1.00
                  1 Tomato - about $0.90
Lemon and Oil (dressing for salad) $0.50
                  1/2 Quart of Milk - Kids - $1.00

                  Dinner for 4 - 18.10

                  Lunch:

                  Son and Daughter:

4 Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches - $2.00
                  2 Apples - $0.50
                  2 Oranges - $1.00
                  4 Chocolate Chip Cookies - $1.00
Money for mil at school $1.2/ea - $2.50

                  Mom and Dad:

                  Leftover Homemade soup $1.00

                  Lunch for 4 - $8.00

                  Breakfast for 4

8 Eggs and a little butter to cook them $1.50
8 pieces of toast and little butter - $1.00
                  1/2 Quart of Orange Juice - $1.00

                  Breakfast for 4 - $3.50

Throw in a liter of soda ($1.00) and a bag of chips ($2.00) for the kids when they watch TV at night

                  Snacks - $3.00

Food expense for today - $32.60

This was just tonight. Some night we'll have Chili dogs, hamburgers, chicken or whatever. But I would say that the $ amount is within $5 of the average.

For example the Shrimp Taco entree was $13 for 4. On a cheaper night we might have Cheeseburgers.

                  Cheeseburgers:

                  1.5lbs of Hamburger - $4.50
                  1 Package of buns $1.50
                  1 Package Cheese food - $1.00
                  1 Tomato - $0.90
Ketchup, Mustard and 1/2 an onion - $0.60

Entree $8.50 ($4.50 less than the shrimp tacos). So lets say the average entree is about $11.

That makes the average day for a family of 4 with 3 modest meals around $30.00. That's no going out to dinner, no Dairy Queen, no alcohol, no Lobster or Steak. Just 3 rather wholesome meals for kids and closer to 2 for the adults.

Thats $900/mo for food for a family of 4 with 2 kids. That's why I found it absurd when people in the other thread were say $40/wk for a family of 4.

So Emperor, you know what it is like. Pretend you were extremely frugal do you think you could get by on $400/mo or $13.33/day for a family of 4. Obviously if you only eat rice, peas and beans you could but then your kids would get taken away from you.

Seriously, no matter how much you tried do you think you could consistently feed a family of four 3 meals a day for $13.33/day. And remember $13.33 a day was on the high side of some of the estimates here.

Hopefully by the time I have kids I won't have to worry about how much I spend on food.

But no, 13.33 is not possible. Especially for a meat and potatoes kind of family.
