Planes, trains and snowmobiles. Are they in trouble? I think they laid off a bunch of workers 2-3 years ago.

By the way, their main Montreal plant is 1/4 mile from my wife's mom's house.

You might have trouble getting defence-related work as a US citizen. I would certainly have trouble getting defence related work in the US as a Canadian citizen.

I guess I can apply at the Big Five American defense firms as planned and explore their Canadian subsidiaries. I'm sure there won't be a ton of competition for a spot north of the border.

Yeah, I figured as much. Never planned on looking into it, but the job prospects in NYC for Canadian lawyers have dimmed considerably in the past couple months.

TN-1 visa. Look into it (for her). If she can get a job Canadianness should not be a problem.

There is some work which is fine for you because NATO membership. But you can't get Canadian security clearances AFAIK.

If there is any joint defence work I'm sure that would be fine for you.

TN-1 is what I plan to get if I do quant finance stuff. Again, AFAIK, as soon as you present graduate degree it's pretty much guaranteed to go through. Needs to be reupped every year.

She's already on that. Finding a job is the hard part, particularly since she won't find out if she passed the NY bar or not for another month or so. Has been waiting since the end of July for the results while the job market goes down the toilet.

Ouch. What type of law does she want to do?

BTW, I know a Canadian lawyer in New York. Works in Midtown at some sort of bank/finance company. If you want I can try and ask her who's hiring (or how she found her job).

She worked at the Human Rights Commission in Quebec, but I think she'd take anything at this point. A friend of mine from Vancouver does real estate law in the city and has offered some advice, but there's really no getting around the financial crisis at the moment. She's coming down next week to talk to people; hopefully she'll get lucky.

The Human Rights Commission, that's that wreckage that charged a journalists for hate crime because he critizized radical islam, isn't it?

                    • That was the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The Quebec Human Rights Commission isn't responsible for that, as Quebec is a separate nation.

                        • The Washington legal field is weathering the storm OK, even though I have heard of firms rescinding offers. Much less reliant on securities work. Could get ugly in NYC, though. I recall that Heller Ehrman went bust recently.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

OTOH, you'd have an easier time than any other foreigner.
