  • O'Reilly just said he lost everything he made in the last 5 years if I understood...

    ...him correctly.

So, are you down too? How many years have you lost?

    Zero.

I haven't looked at my 401(k) since before September. What's the point?

That's it, that's why most have lost. Even if you don't own stocks you might have a 401k or real estate of some sort. That's why I believe this reached to most folks.

I don't have any of those things but I'll be trying to find a job next spring, that's when it might hit me.

Bizarrely enough I'm making a pile of money off of a strange pyramid-ish scheme run by a minister (wierd Korean family financial compact that involves lots of zero-interest loans which'll let me get a rent-free apartment next year, thanks to putting down a very large security deposit).

                      Korean finances are wierd

I sold out of the stock market a few years ago, so no loss there.

My IRA is probably down but not much, I always went with the most stable funds (and other mocked me, who is laughing now!), but in all honest a one or two year period is nothing to an IRA.

What the hey? I'm still down from 10 years ago. Take my word - never, ever, ever do business with a southern stock broker. Who else would refuse to sell Microsoft stock to his clients while pushing Tyco?

As an example of how retirement funds are being hit, this is the government Thrift Saving Plan numbers.

                            G Fund F Fund C Fund S Fund I Fund
                            September 08 0.31% (1.31%) (8.94%) (10.32%) (12.31%)
                            Year-to-date 2.86% 0.84% (19.25%) (16.08%) (27.81%)
                            12 Month 4.05% 3.89% (21.94%) (18.90%) (29.01%)

I am in the G- Fund which is government securities investment. I am pretty sure the 10 year average for the C/S/I (corporate investments of various kinds) funds will look like the G fund by the end of this year.
