Traci Lords was legally underage for all adult films she made except one. She had managed to star in the adult film industry for several years undetected as a minor. Once she attained majority, she endorsed and supported her final film.

This was an astute economic move, as her minor status was later made public and all copies of the prior movies were immediately pulled from distribution, leaving only the one single video as actually legal for sale. Lords denies having planned this.

Because statutory rape is an offense held to strict liability, it did not affect the legal analysis that Lords had held herself out to be an adult. Federal investigators began filing charges against adult film actors, producers, and corporate officers of Xcitement Videos, Inc., in what shaped up to be a massive legal battle against a sizeable portion of the adult film industry.

The lawsuit was stopped only by the discovery that the federal government itself was unintentionally complicit in the deception. Lords had used a passport issued by the Department of Justice, which had erroneously held her out to be an adult, based on a fabricated birthdate. Because the U.S. government cannot be a defendant to a legal case without its consent, the action was dropped.

Likely to the widespread relief of the adult film industry.
