  • What should I do to get into an elite technical university in the USA?

The title pretty much says it all. Right now, I'm completing my Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Pune.

Currently, I'm in my third year, first semester, three months to go till the examination. Four semesters are over, which is roughly the less important half of my degree.

Till now, my scores haven't been anything stellar, merely slightly above average. They are, however, expected to improve quite a bit from the coming exam onwards, for the second half of the degree, given that I've finally started working and stopped wasting all my time slacking off.

My plan is to take the GRE in March or April 2009, and apply to my chosen list of universities before the usual end-of-year deadlines. I get my degree in 2010, so I can start in the fall semester of 2010.

For my GRE preparations, I'm using Barron's text. The mathematics section is pathetic for someone having done three semesters of engineering mathematics, and I don't consider the verbal section too daunting given my vocabulary and command over the English language. And just to help me along, I'll also be attending a class on cracking the GRE for three months before I actually take it.

    A few questions:

What sort of scores must I get from now on to get into an elite institution?
What technical universities are the best for computer science? I know that this is a rather vague question, given that at the Masters' level, the field of specialisation often counts while selecting an institute, but any insight would be helpful.
Do elite universities require the GRE subject test in Computer Science, or is the common GRE sufficient?
What sort of GRE scores are required to get in?
    Anything else I should know?

GRE is easy, based on the test 6 years ago 2100+ is fine to get into an elite school.

In physics and mathematics, the GRE subject test is also required. These are much harder. You would have to ask Comp Sci grad students about the Comp Sci test.

Generally CMU seems pretty uber at CS, and I bet the usual suspects of MIT/etc are good as well.

Top four CS schools are MIT, CMU, Stanford, and Berkeley.

UIUC and University of Washington are also very very good.

You should try Oral Roberts University. I think you'd like it.

Stop being Indian? Seriously, with so many Indians applying to elite US technical schools the odds are heavily against you. You're going to need something that sets you apart from them besides test scores...
