Skimboarding is fun too. They're made out of thin plywood or similar material. Not generally what's used for boogie boarding, though back in the day that's how it started out (just sheets of plywood or anything flat/stiff).
I actually prefer body surfing (just using your body as the "board"). But it takes a certain wave form to work well. With a foam board you can ride just about anything.
