  • Plan B

What if plan A doesn't work, what would your plan B be?

Assume a complete failure of the US economy.

My plan B would be to nationalize everything. Establish some sort of emergency act/ martial law. Pay off our debt around the world with worthless devalued dollars. Establish a new, totally controled currency not traded on the world market. I would nationalize all business and start a super WPA jobs program. The gov controled auto makers would only produce electric cars. The US is the Suadi Arabia of coal, I'd double or tripple the mining of coal and set industry to building scrubbers to clean burn it. That would produce the electric to run the cars and heat the homes. Rebuild the nation's rail and rolling stock for distribution needs. Food production and distribution would get most of the US domestic oil production from distribution railheads, the military, government and law enforcement the rest.

Very basic food stuffs would be a right as soon as things were up and running until the rebuilt, controled economy gave the chance to work to everybody. Then the basics would not be free.

National health care to all who work or serve in the military or are retired or impaired.

I'm no longer in favor of capitalism or free markets if plan A fails. Communism with respect for non destructive religion is, in that case, the best I think. Only the very basics would go to each according to their need and only if they have no chance to work for the betterment of all.

    What's your plan B?

Move to the mountains with enough ammunition to turn anybody who wants to get frisky into slag.

Train the labs to do what they have forgotten.

    Live more deliberately.

Obviously getting out basic stuff that everyone needs is important. I wouldn't try to do too much at first. I would try to get people back to work but at the same time not strain resources too much. I don't think getting oil would be a problem, but I wouldn't do radical stuff with the currency.

What's plan A again? The thing we have, or the thing we'd want to have most?

@ Vel...That works great until you need a medicine that you can't make yourself. Then you realize that civilization means continued life on this world.

Kid, radical stuff with the currency is imo pretty much inevitable now, or soon will be.

Lancer, yep...and with my health/heart troubles, I realize that the absolute worst case scenario means a shortening of my life.

To make up for that, I'd do my best to live fully.

Try to build up a supply of what you need so that you can weather some tough times Vel.

Arrian, the complete failure of our system would leave what other choice? Plus, a couple of the ugliest things about communism is it's godlessness and its threat to export itself to other countries by force. My plan contains niether.

Wouldn't need imported oil. Non essential work, such as writing insurance policies, sueing people, advertising, etc etc would cease. There's been a crash, who will buy a policy? All those traffic jams all over the country would be gone in a day. WPA programs such as extention of railroads and the US manufacturing of all the stuff we currently buy overseas would be decentralized. No need to drive far when the toaster factory is down the block. Most could ride a bike or walk. Product is distrubuted by rail. Eventually when electric cars are available and the electricity to run them is available things could be a bit more centalized, but centralization makes little sense these days.

Without enough oil we would have to create community farms, and redo the whole economy green. We would have to do very small scale manufacturing and everything would have to go local.

It's not that simple. Not by a long shot. How would people get to work?
