What is that debunnked theory that matter is always being created?

There was a popular theory for a while that as opposed to a big bang, some unknown process continually created matter, either at the center of the universe, or in many parts of it.

The theory has mostly been abandoned but I cannot remember what it is called, anyone know what I am talking about?
