  • Happy Liberation Day

Oct. 1 is to the Chinese what July 4 is to the Americans.

If I celebrate this day too it gives me an added reason to party. Woo hoo!

No. I watched a television program about the Chinese, and all of them that were interviewed said that the people who the government took away must be wrong, and the government must be right. They didn't really have an explaination for their beliefs either.

Well they aren't ruled by foreigners... so I believe that's "independent".

Maybe it's too bad they aren't ruled by foreigners.

And this affects the nation's independence... how?

The government is a sovereign government, and that satisfies the test for independence. Institutions like democracy and human rights are not particularly relevant to independence.

Edit: the more I think about it, the more I suspect you may be addressing personal freedoms, which clearly are affected by things like democratic politics and human rights. Is that what you meant, Kidicious?

                          Today China has stood up!
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I'd say there's little doubt that the nation is independent.

But there's plenty of debate over whether (and the degree to which) its people are free.

Interesting notion. Can I try and apply that logic to other examples?
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
