      Yep.

I might point out that Diem was assassinated because he had become a liability. Installed as President of the Republic of Vietnam by the US he attempted to stamp out Buddhism by literally making Buddhist monks illegal. At the time Buddhism was the religion of 95% of the South Vietnamese, but Diem, a Roman Catholic considered the Buddhists to be allies with the communists. Buddhist monks protested by burning themselves in public. Images of saffron-robed monks calmly dousing themselves with gasoline, then sitting on the streets and setting themselves on fire reached the world via TV, and Diem became a liability. Hence the US OK'ed his removal. It should be noted that his successors were, like Diem, Catholic Air Force officers.

I think the majority of weapons used by Hussein's army in 1991 were Soviet made.

Mostly true but there are some big exagerations like "Iraq invades Kuwait with American weapons. 90% plus of the Iraqi military weapons were Soviet. It's also very one sided not explaining what the Vietcong were doing, etc...

Most of it is true, but lack context, like in the Diem case (USA only didn't do anything to stop the coup), or Chile (Allende was responsible for grand crisis in Chile, broke his promesses to other parties in his path to install socialism, the parliament called for his ousting, and USA only helped it, with de facto good results for Chile.

Yes, that's probably why Allende wanted to carry out a plebiscite on his politics which could not happen due to a bloody coup d'etat that led to the massacre of thousands of his supporters.

So you would have no problem with Russian's backinga coup d'etat in Poland, should it result in good economic growth?

I'm willing to bet that at least 50% of countries have a better record.

Having said that I do realize that most of these countries are either minor powers (lire Ireland) or are very young (like African countries).

You are way off my friend. There's a reason why Balthazar Barzon wanted to have Pinochet convicted before court.
A few bad decisions by his government caused economical decline, but let's not forget the decrease of the copper price (which abounds in Chile) contributed to that as well.

And besides a few bad decisions don't warrant a coup or the death and torture of thousands if civilians. If it were, Bush, Putin and just about any world leader would've been executed by now.

In short: your logic is awfully scary.

Do you know many African countries with a good record? 50% is run by dictators who are mostly oppressive at one point or another, 40% by presidents that rigged the elections and the remaining 10% are countries that are outright anarchistic like Somalia.
