    • You're a pediatrician?

I didn't think doctors were allowed to be that stupid!

        • Oh, my 7 week old son's belly button is different to us. It seems to be an outy, but is watery (if that makes sense). It's really malleable/soft and you can push it in and it pops back out. Is that normal?

          • Well, obviously, you should bring it up with your pediatrician or family practitioner at his two month well visit, but it sounds like he has an umbilical hernia; the abdominal wall has not totally closed around his belly button. This is extraordinarily common, and as long as it closes on its own by the time he is two or three years old, nothing to worry about.

But if there is liquid leaking from the belly button, or it is hard and/or swollen and/or painful and/or red, call your doctor ASAP.

            • No liquid, not hard, not swollen or anything... but yeah, we'll bring it up at the next visit.

He actually goes in for a ultrasound on his hips here soon so I asked wifey to ask about the bellybutton.

              • Well, if he's just going in for an hip ultrasound, if it procedure there is anything like it is here, you'll just see the radiology tech and go home, and then your doc will call with the results in the next day or so. You can ask him/her then, but if it isn't leaking and doesn't seem to bother him, almost certainly an umbilical hernia so nothing to get too worked up about.

However, obviously do bring it up just to be sure... I'd hate to steer you wrong.

                Congrats, by the by.

                • Yeah, it's just a tech. I told her to still say something, at least then you're covered. He seems fine. Finally sleeping through the night and back to weight.

He was 3 week early (5 lb 10 oz) and was about 5 lbs when he left the hospital. Now, at 7 weeks, he's 8 lbs and eats like a pig.

Obviously, nobody likes hard times, but a depression isn't in the cards in part because of government spending like Medicaid that increases like clockwork every year.

Unless you really screw things up personally, you will be able to make your payments and have at least a modest surplus to invest every year. Remember that even in the great depression, the vast majority of companies made money and because of the various crashes, stocks were a immense bargain. It might seem rather ghoulish, but let's be clear that a man of your age in your situation should wish for cheap stocks. When the stocks are cheapest, you should try to invest the most.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                          .

You are in a great position. The only downside you face is that more malpractice lawsuits get filed. Luckily, pediatrics has a pretty low rate of filings, though from what I've seen medicare/caid is more likely to sue, anecdotally. This makes my job very secure and lucrative in these times.

When you become senile, come to Texas-we have some amazing medical tort caps. (and no state income tax)

About $350B and $85B is to bailout 6 specific banks, which the government will own shares in now (of course that wasn't good for the stocks of those banks, but whatev).

Ah, but which stocks and when?

I'll probably end up buying more index funds, but I've been pondering picking an individual stock or two as well. Something well-known and likely to be relatively safe. Does Google qualify?

Timing remains the question. Another 3-6 months?
