  • Anglican Church to Charles Darwin: Sorry about evolution

    link

The Church of England will concede in a statement that it was over-defensive and over-emotional in dismissing Darwin's ideas. It will call "anti-evolutionary fervour" an "indictment" on the Church".
The apology, which has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the Church's director of mission and public affairs, says that Christians, in their response to Darwin's theory of natural selection, repeated the mistakes they made in doubting Galileo's astronomy in the 17th century.
"The statement will read: Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practise the old virtues of 'faith seeking understanding' and hope that makes some amends."
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Yeah, I think this is a bit silly.

Would have been meaningful even 100 years ago. Now? No.

And when is Darwin going to apologize for making creationists look dumb?

perhaps people in the US allowing creationism to be teached as a theory or banning evolution should take a note. the apology is of some worth in this regard...

People who want to teach creationism and ban evolution aren't going to see that message since they need to be able to read and comprehend information in the first place.

Creationists excuse: "It's the English, not God-fearing Americans."
After adopted by U.S. Angles: "They're not real Christians anyway."
After adopted by everyone else in world: "That's why there's only a chosen few who enter God's Kingdom."

Creationists don't need Darwin's help to look and sound dumb, they're managing just fine on their own.

Berlusconi should apologize to the Tunisians for the Punic Wars already

I don't think Anglicans have had any problem with evolution for a couple of generations. A couple of years ago our priest announced that "creationists are welcome in the Episcopal Church too."

Even longer. The Anglicans are distinctly embarrassed by the creationist lobby.

This is part of an ongoing move to keep creationism out of schools and mainstream Christian groups by laying down a firm stance.
