  • My computer freaking sucks

Alright, every time I start up windows, right after the XP screen, I receive a generic host process for win32 services error message.

Neither the taskbar nor any icons appear on the screen, just this.

The way around this I have found is to look up the problem on the web so Firefox starts. Then I go into Downloads and Open Containing Folder. Once I click that, the taskbar and everything else reappears.

I really don't want to have to go through this pain every time I startup though. Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue?

    Go to a Restore point?

Also it seems to affect my US connections as they sometimes connect/disconnect randomly.

Unplug it then re-plug it back in.

Restore point was the first thing I tried and of course it didn't work.

I'd say you may have a trojan. How about a scan in safe mode?

Really. You do have a problem.

I'd run the gamut of spyware/malware tools.

I recommend malwarebytes anti malware as a good place after spybot and ad-aware and whatever virus scanner you use.

also run msconfig to see if you can disable anything there that might be screwing with your system.

Sounds to me like Explorer is not starting up at the start of the session. Get your windows CD, boot to it, do a 'repair' - that may fix it. You might try an earlier restore point also, it's possible it got corrupted earlier than you realize.

Otherwise, do a full reinstall of Windows.

Well, this computer doesn't have a working CD drive.

It's an HP so the restore is on the backup HD.

I ended up finding some patch Microsoft made to fix issues with generic host process for win32 services. The error box comes up at startup saying that it has to shut down, but not until after the computer starts up normally. So far I have not found any viruses or anything.
