I couldn't put my finger on it, but I thought David Thorne might be a Brit (or other Commonwealth nation). The dollar symbol threw me off. Then I realized it was the spelling of "realise" that made me think he was a Brit.
Given that the Australian currency is also a dollar, maybe this all took place in Australia?
