  • A new direction in my life.

About three weeks ago I had an interview with the director and two other persons of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln and today (Saturday morning) I called the director at his personal cell phone, which he had provided to me earlier.

They're hiring me as one of their new research associates to work at the archives in Washington DC. I start out there on October 14 if everything goes according to schedule. I will be an employee of the University of Illinois.

So today I gave my three weeks notice at Super Target and will be saying farewell to poverty wages and retail and hello to upward economic mobility and a start of a possible career.

There are a couple of Polytoners who live in or not far from Washington DC, right? I will be moving long-distance so as of now, I'm using the Internet to hunt for apartments and when I have a list of choices, I will try to set up an overnight trip to see the apartments in person before I choose which one I will live in. Any help or guidance you guys can provide is appreciated!

You can be making the national median salary in the DC area and have immense difficulty finding a decent apartment, good luck!
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Well the salary will be about $31,000 and they will also provide a separate monthly amount of $600 to offset some of the living expenses.

I've come across apartments in or not far from DC area that are as low as $600 a month. Besides, if apartments are cheaper outside of the DC area then I could opt to live outside of DC while working in DC.

Yeah, it's not too much money but then again I don't know how much Washington DC costs...just make sure you don't get murdered if you go for a dodgy, cheap area, that's all

I'm going to try to get a mid-priced apartment in a decent enough neighborhood.

Could someone provide a list of some of the neighborhoods to absolutely avoid? A list of okay neighborhoods?

I'd stay clear of Erith and Dagenham.

                thanks

Also, is there some kind of website online where I can access a "cost of living" calculator made to assist people who move long-distance?

                  An apartment for $600? I'm sure it's a ****hole.

You might think about having roommates on your salary. Either that or look at the burbs. A mid-priced small studio apt in a nice neighborhood in the city is going to set you back about $1,200/mo - $1,300/mo.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

$31,000 would not get me a blowjob in DC.

I mention that because you're gay, not because I am, thanks in advance.

Like DanS said, any apartment for $600 within a reasonable distance from DC is likely to be a ****hole. My Apartment complex is "lower-class"(paid for utilities, old facilities, craptacular ventilation) and I'm running $1100 a month, not including pet rent, gas, and cable/internet.
