I've said it once and I'll say it again:

If only poor Scotland were free and governed by a Scotsman, not that fellow at 10 Downing Street... er... wait.

My general belief is that with the EU in place there is little if any need for countries like Spain, Belgium or the UK existing. As a rule smaller countries are more adaptive economically withing the trade block. Also smaller countries are less likely to get involved in wars, actually the only wars small European countries get into today is if other players in the region try to keep them in their current larger polity by force.
I call this the omnipotent EU argument. I don't agree; as more petty states are added to the EU, the decision-making will become ever more contorted and held up by 'national' interests.

I see little point in discussing this on the internet. Let's settle this in the proper manner- on the battlefield.

Pick a venue. Brunnanburgh? Flodden? Culloden? Let's face facts, if the misplaced Irish invaders squatting to the north side of Hadrian's Wall didn't fight like such a bunch of blue-painted fairies we wouldn't be having this debate, would we?

I was thinking more of senatorial pork. Now that I think about it, though, you're right. We're ahead of the game in that one respect. I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad about that.
