Of course, this is a conversation that McCain wants to have.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
I think that taking this approach would be entirely to overt, and would offend the sensibilities of undecided voters. His current line of attack is already sort of borderline, but is a touch more subtle than that, and seems to be working quite nicely.

I don't know. McCain seems to be going for the hatemonger vote. His entire campaign seems to be not what he can do, but why you should hate the other guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see this tactic come out fully in the next few weeks.

McCain's campaign chairman is one of Rove's evil minions, so what do you expect? They throw up more mud than a 4x4 spinning donuts.
Someone hasn't been watching McCain's latest ads... then again, what do you expect from the Obama Kool-Aide Crew .

I'm in a uber-blue state. No one is wasting money on campaign ads here.
Why? What do you know that I don't?
Go on his website. Aside from the solely "John McCain will...", even in his attack ads, halfway through he says "John McCain will...".

Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign is going negative in its advertising against the expected Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama.
The Wisconsin Advertising Project, a nonpartisan group that monitors and analyzes political advertising, finds that ads aired by McCain and the Republican National Committee are "more negative" than those aired by Obama. Ninety percent of Obama's ads are positive and don't mention McCain. One third of McCain's campaign ads are negative, researchers found.

And all of the RNC's ads compare the two candidates, referring to Obama negatively, the research group says.

Actually, it was comments like this that I was also refering to.

Nah, I don't think stronger attacks against Obama would have worked. I think Obama turns fire extremely well, he's like a teflon candidate. You just look stupid afterwards, I think it's going to hurt you more than not, you have to find some hard facts and not try to smear him with nonsense. And Obama has good writers too so .. just better stick to your own thing and try to swing it from your own field rather than try to muddy things up with this one. You have to be extremely clean yourself in order to do it, and Obama is one of the cleanest candidates. Hillary sure doesn't have a clean record. So better just keep quiet IMO.

Only if one were not one of the retards that put George W. Bush into office.

This is just more evidence that Hilary was, in fact, a lousy executive. Flawed as he is, Obama was the better choice; he assembled a smart team that could work together in a disciplined fashion, understand obstacles, and react quickly and effectively to unexpected events. It seems to me that that's what you want in a president -- better, certainly, that someone who surrounds herself with sycophants and bickering egomaniacs she can't control.

Incidentally, Lieberman recently said that Obama isn't "putting America first," and the McCain campaign endorsed his claim...
So yeah, I think it's safe to say that McCain's going to run a campaign largely based on vicious jingoism (see, i.e. his emphasis on Hamas' supposed endorsement of Obama). On the upside, in the process he's going to permanently **** his brand and have trouble getting re-elected to the Senate in two years.
