Bulgaria Foreign Minister: Our Milk Producers May Not Go to Greece

Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin stated Saturday Bulgarian milk producers would not be allowed to enter Greece with their flocks of sheep.

"This will not be normal, and will not happen - our milk producers cannot relocate to Greece, and receive Greek agricultural subsidies", said Kalfin, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the economy commenting on the news that several Bulgarian farmers from the Kurdzhali District had already set off to cross the border into Greece with four flocks of sheep.

"Indeed, the Greek farmers get higher subsidies but Bulgaria like every other new member of the European Union is starting from a much lower level of subsidizing", Kalfin explained.

In his words, the Bulgarian government did everything it could in order to find ways for providing the farmers with additional subsidies but this could not be done outside of the framework of rules of the EU.

"Obviously, the milk producers are having difficulties but it is very sad when this protest becomes political, and is trying to relate to the participation of political parties", the Foreign Minister commented
