Imran, I can't state for the military now, but in 1977-78 when I was in West Germany, I was sent to 40 hours of Project Head Start, IIRC, and wre told in no uncertain terms, on the Kasserne (base) you were subject to UCMJ, but off base you fell under the West German laws and judicial system.

I can only assume this is still so?

Yes, he should have. His rights WERE violated!

There is a reason we have rights, not so they can be tossed away when we decide they are inconvenient.
We have rights. Illegal aliens don't have the same rights. He murdered. We execute murderers. Saying, "Yeah, I did it, but my rights were violated" should be on a Saturday morning cartoon show.

why should they be allowed to have "special rights" such as legal counsel from their home govt

Uh... cause we signed a treaty saying such? That's also why Americans have "special rights" such as legal consel from our government in other countries.

          These are international rights.

Then if as you have pointed out, wasnt their more fuss about this?

The crime took place 7.5 years ago, now its a problem after the execution?

Just sharing, your of the opinion it is a signed agreement, if so, then why wasnt some big fuss raised by Honduras or the mans family?

Perhaps because certain criteria had to be met in order to be eligible for this agreement?

I dont know but perhaps you could inform us why it is an issue now and not during the previous time that expired between the crime>trial>awaiting of execution?

            Thanks

Germans would still be required to tell you that you could call your consolate and get representation from there.

Simple fact could be that they just didn't know. They heard about the Mexican case and realized, Hey, I didn't get to speak to my consulate either!

Given the fact this isn't a little known treaty, isn't it a little late to bring it up?

This really isn't that hard, folks. The USA signed a treaty. Texas apparently refuses to honor it.

The facts of the underlying case are irrelevant.

Terry O'Rourke, a lawyer on Chi's legal team who teaches international law at Houston's University of St. Thomas, said Chi's guilt wasn't the issue.

"Chi is a murderer, Medellin is a murderer," O'Rourke said. "But we don't kill all murderers. We don't execute all murderers. We do it according to the law.

"When your state violates international law to kill somebody, it has very negative consequences."
In other words, I don't feel sympathy for "my rights were violated" murderer. It's not about that.

You still misunderstand. It's not that Texas doesn't know, it's that Texas has laws against murder, and illegal aliens. What you seem to be saying is that if one wants to murder, come over illegally. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
