Sleep apnea certainly impairs your ability to function. Before I got my CPAP machine, I was getting to the point where I could barely function. Though I've had the machine for about two years now, I can tell I'm still not where I used to be when I was younger, but I'm a lot better than I was. I do suspect there's been some brain damage.

I was telling this to someone yesterday and he said I'm still leaps and bounds beyond most. :/

Oxygen deprivation do to long exposure to sleep apnea can case minor brain damage. The sucky thing is most sleep apnea has to do with being over weight or at least to having fatty deposits in the air ways. This restricts breathing when you're relaxed (like when asleep) and can even kill you. Drinking and smoking can also make sleep apnea worse. I suspect there really are huge numbers of people with this without even knowing it.

Is there a simple way to diagnose that without having to go to a doctor and look like a total hypochondriac?

I'm not overweight, I don't drink (anymore), and the most I'd ever smoke is a half-cigarillo a day without inhaling, so the odds I'd have obstructive apnea are fairly low despite lack of exercise, but some people are just born with a neurological glitch even in the absence of an obstruction. It would be interesting just to check and see, but oximeters are expensive as hell and I can't find any way to just rent one.

If you sleep alone, I guess the best way would be to tape yourself. If there are periods where you don't breathe, you've got sleep apnea. Otherwise, a partner can just listen. If you aren't snoring, you probably don't have SA.

Have your endocrine levels checked. Hmm, also testosterone levels.

                    BP and colesterol ok?
