  • Use eminent domain. Seize GM and Ford. Give them to Toyota

    • Toyota wouldn't take them.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

        • Or just burn the factories to the ground. Salt the earth so they can never rise again.

            • Change the law so automaker shareholders are personally liable for their debts.

                  • The biggest problem is that the credit crunch has made it virtually impossible for people to buy cars. Credit markets still are working because banks still aren't lending.
That's certainly a problem for all automakers. It's not particularly a problem for GM and Ford. Rather, their ****ty cars, ****ty management, and ****ty labor deals are.

                    • I repeat my earlier call to have them nationalized, union contracts nullified, and for the pensions & medical costs to be shifted to taxpayers.

                      • Toyota, Honda, and the like are still making money in these conditions.

                        • I'm not sure that's true given that Toyota and Honda were both down 20%-30% last month. Lay offs are spreading accross the industry even to Japanese makers.

                          • Apparently, the car companies now want a total of $75 billion in loans. $25 billion for fuel efficiency (already appropriated), $25 billion for health care costs, and $25 billion for general liquidity.

Of course, I wouldn't expect them to stop at a mere $75 billion...

                              It's true. Check their financials.

How about I let them sodomize me while they're at it?

I didn't realize that allowing somebody to borrow 10 times more than they were worth was a good idea.
