The linked article says that this is merely the regularly occuring 11-year minimum. Nothing to worry about here.

We've had enough smoke coming over the hill from the Northern Californian wildfires that the sun was dimmed enough at sunrise that I could look through my telescope at it and not burn a hole through my cornea. I noticed the lack of sunspots. I was disappointed because the last time I could do that, there was a few to look at and I saw them in great detail.

When the sun is dimmer (by a lot) than the red LEDs in your alarm clock/radio, you can risk it. Go look at the Google page and look at the first "o" and the "e" and you'll see just how "bright" the sun was at that time through clouds thick with the ashes of trees and woodland creatures. Hell, this smiley is brighter red than the sun was.
