I presume for the cost of this level of piracy is isn't worth a naval deployment, I mean, what is $1.2m versus the cost of deploying several frigates or aircraft carriers for quick response? Not a lot...

Whether that is the right message to give though is another debate entirely.

The virtually everywhere where shiplines come close to shores which contain improverished people. The Carribean is another pirate hunting ground.

Well that's somewhat understandable. They do have the rum supply cornered.

There is a cost-benefit analysis to it. On the other hand, many of these ships are being deployed anyways. And having ships around the HoA isn't exactly keeping them far from the action.

They are not being deployed anyway, there is a reason there is an entire joint coalition task force in charge of the region.

And don't let the piracy angle fool you, the real reason why we are actaully there (well, the more important reason anyway) is because terrorists are smuggled to Somali and back via the Gulf of Aden.

They mention the terrorism angle in the article. The whole terrorism thing is what I meant by HoA not being far from the action. The Indian ocean is the mare nostrum of the Islamic world.

The thing is, this has been going on for a couple years now and the attacks appear to be growing more and more brazen. That perception of increasing brazenness may be a result of media manipulation, in which case I'm open to fresh information.

I can't believe nobody has suggested hiring ninjas to take care of these pirates.

In any case, the Indians probably have something to say about that

The Gulf of Oman and the Sea of Aden more acurately encompass what Felch is suggesting.

I didn't read the article, but isn't Somali internet access very slow and limited? How much of a piracy problem is there with Somalis compared with say Swedes?
