  • What do you need your computer for?

There are plenty of things we do with computers to make life simpler, like banking online and paying bills online, but is there anything you really need your computer for?

I've been thinking about it over the past month or so. I spend far too much time at the keyboard, either playing video games or wasting time reading random articles online. I've been debating taking a sledge hammer to my computer. Not as a service to you all, but to remove the distraction from my life. One problem is that when I started banking and paying bills I started doing it all online, I don't actually know how to bank and pay bills the old fashioned way.

I come up with other excuses not to do it as well. For example there is a plethora of information online. As well as the ability to communicate with people about subjects that most people don't care about, like porn and communism. On the other hand I don't read nearly as much as I used to. Going through high school I would read two or three books a week, now I read about one a month. I also don't really absorb most of the information that I read online, I usually memorize snippits of information.

And of course there is the false social aspect of it all. I don't normally care for the company of other people. Unfortunately it seems the internet is able to provide just enough socialization for me to be satisfied (yeah I'm a ****ing recluse, which one of you isn't? ).

Maybe there is something I need my computer for though and I don't realize it. Which is why I am asking you all if there is anything you need yours for. I don't feel like smashing my computer into itty bits and then regret it as it dawns on me that I need it for _____.

I do nearly all banking online. Auto deposit and pay bills online. I like "the information highway". A person can learn about any subject.

Practice, if you use computers at work. To write that great novel in the back of your mind. To keep yourself from going insane trying to remember an obscure but googlable fact. To maintain some thin connection to the rest of humanity without leaving the house.

Mostly word processing and email. Other than the phone, I pretty much make my entire living online.

I'd rather not do protein homology alignments by hand.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
