It certainly ain't the free non-interventionist system it has claimed to be.

While true, the nationalizing is paid through an insurance mechanism. Most of the time, this ends up meaning no out-of-pocket to Uncle Sam. IndyMac's implosion is covered by this insurance fund.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Who would decide such a thing? Middle America breeds banks like fireflies.

The implosion of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is another rather impressive event. Each are now basically worthless. Today alone, Fannie has dropped 29% and Freddie has dropped 26%.

Roland was about 10 years too early, I guess.

Don't you find it odd that market stays afloat despite 2F's disaster?

No, he was right back then. It just took this long for the markets to finally figure it out.

No, he wasn't right back then, at least on the facts. As far as I know, Fannie and Freddie getting into the subprime game (what is hurting them now mostly) has been only in the last few years.

He might have been right in that these institutions tend toward needing bailouts because of their mandates and structure.
