Yeah...over time is better. Less tax that way...a lump sum could put you in another tax bracket and that could be ugly.
I got a nice severence when they shut down my division in March. Regular pay and benefits through the end of May and then a lump sum severence, plus 100% of Cobra for 3 months after that. Finally got paid, five days late.
