Yup, and we also have huge output of natural gas.

(And Russia's reserves are far higher and production just hasn't ramped up yet. You left that part out.)

Russia's output is already starting to decline.

The Japaneses will make back their investments in efficiency no matter what the rest of the world dose, either they will export their systems at huge profits or they will export their products as an increasingly better undercutting of the rest of the worlds cost of production as energy becomes a greater and greater share of that production costs.

The US output is declining as well.

U.S. Production peaked in the early 70's at around 10 mbpd, Russia's peak is under that but if you look at the total for the 'FSU' (Former Soviet Union) its about equal to that 10 mbpd.

Oerdin's point in fundamentally correct, the US WAS very oil rich and in fact has pumped more oil then any other country on Earth because it started first and pumped every drop it could for a hundred years. Its now one of the most depleted areas in the world but consumption patterns haven't adjusted yet.

For sure, but that is not really what Oerdin was saying.

Anyway, Russia is mostly natural gas, not oil. It's got a little over twice as much oil as the US in proved currently economical reserves. The figure for natural gas is about eight-fold; Russia has 25% of the world's natural gas reserves.

What year are those stats and from who? Stats that I have for 2007 from BP are 9.978 for Russia and 6.879 for the US. A 43% difference.

Russia's production has also been increasing every year on year since 1998.

Bah, with all the nationalizing Putin did it's doubtful they'll see a rise in output. In fact Russia output is falling primarially because the government keeps stealing from anyone who would invest in increasing output. If US politicians and NIMBYs would get out of the way production could rise 500,000 barrels a day.

We'd Still be 8 million barrels a day short but it would be a big change in imports. Also Coal liquification a la WW2 Germany would greatly improve output. The problem is out government is stupid. When it comes to total hydrocarbon reserves the US has the largest in the world.
