  • Police Retribution

A man in the Prince George's County suburb of Washington allegedly purposely ran over a police officer, killing him. The suspect was brought into custody and put in solitary confinement. That night, the suspect died, and it was initially reported the next day that no foul play was suspected. However, later that day, the coroner ruled it a homicide by strangling.

This case has exploded on the local scene in just two days. Definitely a front page lead headline story that no doubt will be national news.

What do you think about this police retribution?

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

CNN said something weird about this story this morning. The only people with access to the suspect were the guards and their supervisors. Then CNN reported that the police were not suspects.

This year, a guard who was allegedly a member of the Bloods street gang was arrested on charges of supplying cellphones to inmates; another was charged with armed robbery and assault; two inmates were found to have keys; and a detainee was wounded when he was allegedly attacked by seven gang members in a holding area. On June 4, the director of corrections was fired after four handguns disappeared from the jail armory.

A jail employee who spoke on condition of anonymity said any officer can enter the unit where White was held. "If you want to go and get in there, you can get in there," said the employee, who was not authorized to speak publicly. "If you want to get to somebody, you can."

Sounds like they have several security problems there.

Stupid police, they should let this guy rot in his cells for 20 years and then be executed.

Strangling happens so quick and is only slightly painful.

PG County Cops, btw, don't exactly have a shining record as far as not killing suspects goes.

Don't piss them off, that's for sure.

I've got a buddy who ran around College Park one sunday morning on a head full of acid, and wound up thinking he was in some African country. When the cops approached him he asked them to shoot him, because he didn't want to wind up in a third world jail.

They took him to the hospital instead, but that's only because he was very lucky.

Police corruption seems to be fairly wide spread in the US.

It a big country, with tens of thousands of independant local juridictions. On a typical workday, with only about a 3 mile one way commute, I pass through 10 local jurisdiction with police powers and forces (but 4 of those are little more than premises security forces)

Don't confuse police brutality with police corruption.

For example, IMHO, if I ever tried to offer a bribe to an L.A. cop, he beat the snot out of me. They're not crooked here, just mean.

This is very true. A little background for the sake of the others might be useful.

Prince George's County is the largest suburb nationwide that is majority African-American (about a million people I guess). It has some rough urban spots but also some great spots, including rural areas and rich areas. Overall, it's socioeconomic condition is pretty good -- i.e., this is a place with a lot of well-off and well-educated African-Americans.

That said, the violence in the rough urban spots has been spiraling upward, such that nowadays more people are murdered in Prince George's County than in DC. DC is pushing the bad elements out of the city and the County is absorbing a lot of them.

So the cops might have some reason to feel defensive in some areas of Prince George's County. That's why you might get cops who feel like they have to defend their own. The County has gained a reputation for shootouts where the suspects end up dead.

I think more can be said, without excusing the action. One of my bosses (an old public defender) said "usually they would shoot the guy dead in the act of apprehending him." My secretary said something to the effect of "if you kill a cop, expect his friends to respond likewise."

Also, I would be interested in hearing a defense of the police retribution, if anybody here would like to defend it.

Hey, they had to do it. When was the last time you heard of a judge strangling the defendant?
