  • Yahoo Instant Messenger archive question

YIM automatically saves your chats, and you can view the archive later. But this is purely on your computer, not on the server. Meaning if you change computers, the old chats remain on the old computer and not on the new.

    Here's my question:

What file are the chats saved in on your hard drive? One of my computers died last year and I want to recover all the chats I had with my brother. He's happy to go into his computer and email me his file, but he needs to know what it is.

I don't know for sure since I don't use YIM, but my guess would be to look somewhere within the documents and settings folder. Assuming you use windows of course.

      Maybe this will help.

        1. Close Yahoo! Messenger (if it's currently running).
        2. Go to your Desktop and double-click "My Computer."
        3. Select the C: drive.
        4. Go to "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles".
        5. Your "Profiles" folder contains your complete Message Archive. Copy it to the same location on another machine if you want to view it elsewhere.
