Sorry Laz, but qft. If there were any significant economic incentive to "explore" this island, these people would be fvcked. It's not like with the Brazilian tribes who can move into other parts of the vast Amazon to continue hiding.

I think the point is being missed. Even without any key resources, any number of do-gooders have been desperate to go improve the lives of these people. Faced with that, is hostility the best response?

It's my understanding (from three seperate college teachers: 2 anthros and a sociologist) that in anthropology, the field is shifting towards avoiding contact if possible. Methinks the do-gooders who aren't up to speed in modern anthropology won't get the memo until there's an arrow through their face.

Well, I disagree.

First of all, they are living in some POS place, that no one wants on invade. Secondly, we know them, they don't know us. That means, that we choose to let them be. They can't make that decision. The anti-process of letting them enjoy their stone age life is something we can do. We can push a button and destroy their whole history and existance. They don't even know what a button is.

So... in a way the lack of our hostility towards is keeping them alive today, the hostility towards others in them might have kept them alive for a long time. They can keep being hostile, like little kids, but parents still place the toys up high, so they can't reach them. They can stomp the ground and throw temper tantrums, but it's not keeping them alive anymore. The lack of hostility of others is.

Actually, I have found that if all I do is sit around and build all the wonders I can as quick as I can and ignore ample units within my city to defend me then the other guys get pizzed at me for hogging all the wonders and send a horde of dudes to kill me. Who can blame them? Since I've been building buildings they've had no choice but to build army men to spank me. However, if I build a few wonders, and get one town to just crank out axemen early on and attack anyone that asks me to open my boarders (greedy jerks), then I fair much better in the long game.

So, is aggression a better policy for longterm survival?

The article in the OP makes no sense, even after I read it.

Arrows would not stop a modern human group from taking over these people or exterminating them. It's simply because, as someone else in this thread pointed out, that there is no real strong interest for a modern human group to do so.

What do you think would have happened had they not been intractably hostile to visitors?

My money would be on them being decimated by diseases, shunted into a reservation to be cared for, and having their way of life fall apart.

In a sense their hostility has kept them alive even though they would be no match for even a small squad of modern soldiers. They can't understand of course is that the only reason their hostility works is because the larger society sees no real importance to their island beyond the curiosity of a primitive society. Their hostility works only because those in charge don't wish or need to crush them.
