'Novice' Website Building Tools?

I'm looking to build a website. I know of a few software titles that can do this. But, I am a novice...I've yet to actually use any of them.

I would like a list of the easiest to use that also offer some great features.

I would like one list to include only "free" titles and a second list for titles one would have to pay for.

I already have the domain registered and hosting setup for it (GoDaddy). I looked at the tools that were offered for free with the hosting, but they sucked to say the least; well at least of what I could find that they offered.

What kind of website are you trying to make? For something simple, it might be easier just to do the HTML yourself. There are a lot of tutorials we could dig up that would make that easy to learn. Plus you might find it more rewarding to make your site in notepad.

Adobe has Dreamweaver. I've only used it in a class where it was required, but it seemed pretty good.

The site is for my girlfriend. She's a writer. She wants a blog, a place to upload some photos to inlcude in the blog, showcase some of her literary works, a guest book/log, a newsletter that people can subscribe to, ect.

I think she eventualy wants to be able to sell ads on the site.

Plus, once it's set up, I want her to be able to keep it up with minimum help from me..

She's sort of tech savy, but then again, not really; she says that most electronic things hate her (because when they don't work as she thinks they should or don't work at all, it only because they have something against her!) LOL

Evidently Microsft Front Page isn't available? I've not tried it, but got the impression that was what was the intent.

Sounds like she wants blogging software, then. The learning curve on HTML will kill enthusiasm, and you will still need to chew a bit if you are not familiar with basic tools like FTP.

I am not into blogging, but Wordpress is the name that comes around the most. I am pretty sure it is free.

I'd use a pre-made site, then, if you can; plenty of places provide what you want... if not, I'd use Wordpress as well.

Wordpress looks like one of the ties for 1st, depending on needs, at the site Omni posted; which goes with snoopy's answer.
