  • CanPol - You won't hear Tories on the news

But you may hear them at your gas station.

New Tory attack ads are "blatant lies" and a desperate ploy to detract from a series of scandals engulfing the Harper government, Liberals charge.

The Conservative Party unleashed a series of aggressive multi-media spots yesterday, including "fuelcasts" that pipe out their political message at gas stations. The target is Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, who will "trick" Canadians into a cash-grabbing carbon tax, according to the ads.

Liberal MP and environment critic David McGuinty called it a "cheap hack stunt" designed to instill fear and mislead Canadians.

"When we do reveal our plan, it will be coherent and it will meet with success not only on the environmental side but on the economist side," he said. "That's why they have to go out and attack, because they're desperately worried about the growth potential and capacity of this idea."

Radio ads will broadcast in target markets across Canada, while the fuelcasts will play at select stations in the Toronto area and southwestern Ontario. Party officials would not provide locations of the service stations where TV screens are mounted on pumps to display the ads.

Officials said the ads, which cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars," are designed to warn Canadians that Dion's plan could cost them dearly on gas and electricity bills. But McGuinty said Canadians won't be fooled and predicted a public backlash.

"These ads are blatant lies, but I would expect nothing less from this team," he said. "When they've got brushfires burning all around them from Cadman to Bernier to in-and-out to NAFTA-gate, what are you going to do? Light another fire."

"Carbon taxes are really legitimate, effective policy options that governments in progressive countries around the world have used to deal with climate change," Clare Demerse, a government policy analyst with the Pembina Institute, said. "To see our government dismiss them in such a flippant way is very disappointing."

Demerse said the Conservatives' "dismissive" approach to the carbon tax issue comes as their own climate change plan has been widely criticized as inadequate. It is also out of step with the public, as polls have shown the idea of carbon taxes is gaining support among Canadians.

Speaking to the NDP federal council in Ottawa yesterday, NDP leader Jack Layton outlined his party's cap-and-trade carbon pricing plan. It would put a price on carbon by setting a cap on the amount a big polluter can emit, then establishes a carbon credit auction and puts in place a market where credits can be traded.

Lovely. A government that has a pathological fear of talking to the media is now going to assault my sensibilities when I fuel up. I can see some stations doing without my business this summer. First time I hear a Tory ad at a gas station I'll be looking for a new station.

Anything's better than the Pizza Pizza jingle they play now.

I don't see what the big deal is. If they want to raise money through private donation to run ads, why would you stop them?

If they used public money to do this, I'd be pissed. But I don't see it as any different then using private money to air radio and TV ads, or print newspaper ads?

Anything to ensure Dion doesn't ever get to be PM.

My problem is more with the gas stations. I go there to buy gas - not be exposed to political ads while I have no choice but to stand there and listen. Pizza Pizza ads would not be much better.

You're inundated with ads already at these gas station. Pizza Pizza jingles, commercials about going on a vacation, etc.

If your problem is with gas stations having advertising, why is this a CanPol thread?

Some Toronto bars used to have video advertisements above the urinals. Still, I guess the Conservative Party ads wouldn't play on those, as it would encourage men to play "How High?"

At U of T someone put ads in the toilets, so some students went around and replaced them all with Escher tessellations.

No I am not. I have yet to have a gas station ad.

I find it more than hilarious that a political party afraid of being heard is going to place ads at gas stations. It makes sense as they still won't have to answer any questions from nosy citizens and media.

As to your fear of Dion - I think Dion is a 1st class idiot but I also feel Harper has to go. One doesn't outweigh the other.

Then this is a non-issue to you. Go to an Esso station in Waterloo or most of them in Toronto, they have 19" LCD-TVs with full sound above the pumps. They show news headlines, weather forecasts and...all kinds of ads. They also show missing children posters on them.

I find it more than hilarious that a political party afraid of being heard is going to place ads at gas stations.
Sounds to me like they are not afraid of being heard, but are afraid of how people twist what is said. Do you even read The Star or Globe & Mail? If I were them I wouldn't talk to those clowns either.

I don't have time to hang out in Ottawa to keep track of what the gov is up to. In a democracy we count on the media for that. If a PM won't trust his own Cabinet Ministers to talk to media w/o making complete asses of themselves, why should I trust them to govern the country.

It's not just Star and Globe. This gov is afraid of 90% of the media in this country. If you truly think the coverage is biased then it's unclear to me how continuing to snub them makes the problem better. I guess the Cons would rather get their message out via gas stations.

There is a good reason why this government is making no gains despite the Liberals being burdened with Dion. Policies/ideas like this are it.

A 2.5-year long minority government is pretty remarkable, no matter how you spin it.

You can blast them for not making "gains", but by keeping Dion weak with policies like these it extends their current government.

And to be honest, the people whining about these new ads need a reality check. It's an ad just like what you see on TV or the radio or on the subway.

You wonder why this government hates the media, and then the media kicks up a ****storm pretending like it is controversial or heavy-handed for a government to use private donations to buy advertising. It's just creepy the way the media and some people treat this government -- with that said, I'm not a fan of this government....

I don't watch TV or ride the subway. I do hear an ad on radio every now and then.

The difference of course being that I can choose not to watch/listen. Here I have to avoid buying gas.

I would say that interactive (ie, voice) ads in stores are a bit annoying, particularly if they're not for the store. I could see a gas station ad being even more annoying, because you have to stand next to it for a period of time (in a store you can just walk away)...

They're certainly inevitable, though, unless we change to an autocratic system... which won't happen.

Please, you've no more choice in looking at Subway ads than you do watching the ads at gas stations.

No, you don't. Not all gas stations have the TVs. Most do not. Yours do not, even.

If your issue is against advertising everywhere, that is a valid discussion. But to blame the government here for including gas stations as a venue for advertising, when they were clearly just one of many mediums available to the ad company they hired, is ridiculous.

The way you and most media are acting and portraying this is the conservatives are subverting every aspect of life. The evil conservatives are installing TVs at life-critical locations to inundate us with supreme propaganda!

A well-reasoned individual would take this away from the situation:
                            1) The convervatives are using 100% private money to do this, not public
                            2) The conservatives are only using existing TVs-at-the-pumps showing existing advertising to show the ad which would come at the replacement of the very annoying Pizza Pizza jingle-ads.

This is not a big deal, nor is it worth the front-page hysteria it is getting in terms of media coverage.

FWIW, I quite like the TVs. Most of the content they show are headlines, forecasts, etc. which keep me sufficiently entertained. It's no worse than the "OneStop" plasma screens on the subway or in my apartment building.
