  • Airlines to Charge by the Pound?

    Any opinions on this? Fair/unfair?

Personally, I think it's a great idea. It's not discriminatory, because the purpose is to ensure that everyone pays a fair price for a ticket. If certain people cause the airline to use more fuel, then they should pay more, yes?

They used to do this a long, long time ago. It was more useful back then since weight distribution was a bigger problem also.

Only a portion of the price should be affected by weight (eg, they must explicitly and reliably break down the fuel charges).

Well, it costs x amount of money to transport 1 pound x miles at x speed. Shouldn't be too tough to figure out.

Yes, but only a fraction of the cost is due to weight.

In many cases the most important factor is the demand for the seats.

What will they charge to carry a kilo?

Good point, demand plays a part in pricing. However, it's no secret at all that rising fuel costs are costing the airline industry billions, both directly (the actual cost to them) and indirectly (less disposable income for people to use for plane tickets). I guess my main point was, does anyone think it is unfair for airlines to charge different prices to different customers, for the same seat, dependent upon certain conditions?

I do, When the same seat is comfortable for a150 lb. man, a 220 lb. man is far more uncomfortable.

If you are going to charge me by weight, you better seat me comfortably by weight also.

              Or not.

              ACK!

A 220 lb. man needs to be stowed with the luggage.

These measures will be a godsend for sales of my patented Helium inflated carry-on luggage. I am also applying for a patent for similarly constructed undergarments.

Al Qaeda offers better service than most commercial airlines.

Frankly, it would be more rational to charge more to people who are loud, or who have stupid haircuts that protrude above the top of the head rest, or most of all, ****ing children. If anyone needs to go in the hold, it's the brats.

Why would that be rational when the issue is fuel consumption?

                          The plane weights about zero.

                            I would like airfare pricing to go a la carte if the ticket price were to go down to compensate;

                            Luggage; $1/pound
                            Drink Service; $5/beer, $2/soda
                            Pressurized Cabin; $15/500 miles
                            Seat belt; $8
                            Carry-on; $10 per bag, max 2
Seat cushion that can also operate as a flotation device; $10
                            Sober pilot; $600
                            Knowledgeable ground crew; $65/crew member
Being flown to correct destination; $75

Still, despite my jest, this does bring up a good point in that this will just force more people to take more carry-ons. It's already bad enough that business class guys check nothing, yet bring as much as a family of 8 going on a 2-week vacation.

Flying in general sucks, if they can make it more affordable, anyway they can, I am for it. Or, if they could make it more pleasurable I am fine paying the prices. However, I doubt this will do either. It will probably just give me something more to complain about concerning that industry.
