Help a Rasta out

OK. So I've been going through a Reggae thing the past couple of weeks. The problem is that it isn't a musical genre I know a great deal about, and I've discovered that the rest of the internet isn't exactly helpful (Amazon's recommendation system just tells me that other people who like Bob Marley records own most of the classic rock albums I already have.).

Before anyone makes the obvious suggestion, I already own pretty much everything Bob Marley ever did (except some of the very early stuff), and a smattering of other stuff, like Funky Kingston.

I prefer stuff with ponderous and heavy bass lines. Thickly accented and unintelligible lyrics are a plus as are militantly pro-black, pro-cannabis and pro-African sentiments. I'd like to avoid the more homophobic stuff that's around.

So can Apolyton's reggae aficionados suggest any obvious buys before I head out to the record store on Saturday?

there are 2 kinds of reggae.

Calypso (which i dislike)

and

Dancehall (which i like)

Keep in mind that this is just an example, as I believe Winky D to be a "1 hit wonder," and would not recommend buying his stuff.

Bob Marley is more the Calypso-Style and I do not know much about that type of reggae. If you like the more modern Dancehall I will give you a list of good artists.

Also Reggae nowadays is broken up into long 10-25 minute collabos called Riddims where it is 1 beat with a mix of various artists all singing in succession.

I would recommend a simple you-tube for Dancehall Riddim and see all the artists and riddims that come up and judge that way.

Now Calpyso is a little different and i canot help you much there.

I'm doing that right now. I would like some album recommendations if anyone has them. Particularly stuff that is counted as essential reggae listening by fans or is considered classic.

It's a "festival" that includes a parade.

I've never been closer than watching on TV myself but I imagine attending in person would be a serious immersion in reggae.

"Yellowman" seems pretty cool, even if he isn't quite the style I was thinking of (and there's quite a bit of hate in it).

The stuff I like seems to be called "roots", although I only like the slower stuff. Apparently, the "dancehall" stuff has been the cool reggae since the early 80s, which puts me among the fogeys.

Peter Tosh looks like the main man, I think (I have a couple of tracks by him already). I'll empty the record store of his stuff tomorrow. I bought Black Uhuru's Sensemillia; Bunny Wailer's Blackheart; and Lee Perry's Super Ape off of iTunes, because they were at sale price.

Any further recommendations would be appreciated.
