    Should polygamy be made legal?

    It's being debated on a local radio show right now, in the wake of all the nonsense in Texas.

    So, how 'bout it?

    Is there any good reason it should be illegal? Really?

    Personally wouldn't have any interest, but hey, I think gay marriage should be legal as well, but don't have any plans to engage in it either.

    I don't think there is any problem with polygamy. The problem is typically the people who practice it are also doing illegal things like marrying little kids and raping them.

        It would have to have a poll to be an invalid poll. The whole thread is invalid.

          Why not make that illegal?

                        Age of consent and statuatory rape laws would cover minors. "Marriage" itself would simply be meaningless to the state. (Much like it already is in many cases where people claim to be married, but aren't legally.)

                          My husband and I were discussing this exact question while watching Larry King Live last night. He had a number of the FLDS members on his show rehashing the incident with the kids.

                          Logically, I can't really think of a reason why polygamy is illegal, but I think the law stems from people thinking it is immoral to have more than one wife. However, times are changing and the public's view of what is immoral is not the same as it was 50 years ago.

                          It seems that while affairs are accepted and gay marriage is made legal, I wouldn't be surprised if the courts turned the law around on polygamy. After all, adultery and fornication are legal, you can sleep with anyone you want, but you can only marry one person.

                          Personally though, I think the idea of polygamy is revolting, I would never be able to share my husband with anyone else. Thankfully, my husband agrees that one wife is quite enough. I also think that it may make the man feel that he has all the power, a situation that inevitably turns to abuse.

                            Polygamy will never be legal in the West.

                            However it is very likely that serial monogamy is going to gain social acceptance. That is, divorce is going to become more and more acceptable until having 2 or 3 wives/husbands during the lifetime becomes the norm.
