Don't know. If it's a tax on consumption it would be similar to everywhere else I suppose. If it's a tax on production...

Surprising as it may seem, I am not entirely against the idea of higher gasoline taxes if they are implemented properly.

He'll have a very hard time selling it if is a tax on consumption as most will not see that as revenue neutral (forget tax shifting - too hard to explain on the campaign trail and requires trust in politicians we just don't have).

I'd be surprised if it wasn't geared at the production end of things.

        Then WTF would Ontario care?

The only reason this could be an election problem for him is if it is on consumption.

Incidentally, did you catch the National tonight? They had a panel discussing Harper's government and its relationship with the civil service. Could be the basis for a good thread.

Seriously, how often do Canadian pols campaign on a platform of raising taxes?

Rarely. They will do the "revenue neutral" argument and hope we buy it. The last good example of it working was the imposition of the GST in the 80's. It was to replace the hidden MST (tax on manufacturers) and be revenue neutral. It ended up being a cash cow.
