  • PBS' Carrier

I didn't see a thread about this, which was surprising...maybe I overlooked it in my search.

Carrier is a 10 hour episodic show that recently aired on PBS in 2 hour segments. The show centers around life aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz during a six month deployment in 2005 as part of the Iraq war. The show was really good in my opinion. The Navy allowed the filmmakers almost unlimited creative control, only editing out I think 2 scenes, both because they contained footage of computer screens with classified information, or because they showed sensitive closeups of the fighter jets. As far as the crew interviews, etc, the Navy allowed the personnel to speak freely (topics include America's invasion of Iraq, the alleged 9/11 connection, the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, how deployments affect relationships at home, racism, etc).

You can watch it on the website, look up local listings for the next showing, or acquire it through other means. Like I said, the show is really good, well worth the watch.

I think the lack of posting about it reflects a lack of interest in the Navy in these parts

It was pretty good, the Navy is planning on using it as a training tool in basic/A school as a glimpse at shipboard life before recruits get there.

A lot of *****ing as expected, thats what you get when you follow the bottom rung of any organization especially under the stresses of a deployment. I am glad they let them speak there mind even though I know many viewers will not apply context.

There were two especially excellent episodes dealing with racism and sexual harrasment.
