"Apocalype was a great game." - DrSpike
"In Apoc, I had one soldier who lasted through the entire game... was pretty cool. I like apoc for that reason, the soldiers are a bit more 'personal'." - General Ludd

I can't think of a reason why they'd do that.

They did such in the past, but it seems that they have dropped that line - guess that it's just a cold war kneejerk from Rah

When the authorithies screwed up... Maybe they should have regulated earthquakes like they regulate reincarnations, but other than that there isn't much they can be blamed for.

Well, the authorities are in full control

"I believe we can certainly overcome the disaster with the public and the military working together under the leadership of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the government," he said.

Since comminists have been so awe-inspiring in success stories?

Iirc Chernobyl was initially reported as a fart of particularly potent vehemence.

Truly sad bit of timing for this quake, everyone was at work, kids in school.

What's up with the knee-jerk posts?

Unless there's any indication gov't incompetence has been exacerbating the situation, there's no reason at all to assume they'd downplay casualties. The quake is not their fault.

Let me go on record for not saying that, Colon.
What I said, was that there was no success in a communist country.

Not true Sloww! The wall across Germany effectively stopped the massive ongoing flight of the population to freedom in the West. By making the place a large prison the communists successfully got people to stay. Many died trying to escape but the rest just gave up all hope. Communism can take great pride in that.

That's true. I hadn't thought about that, and that was big. Good one.

We traveled fairly extensively right at the epicenter of this earthquake when we were in China last summer. It’s on the road from Chengdu to the Panda Preserve at Wolong. (Pictures from better times at the Wolong Wildlife Preserve can be found
                              here and here).

IIRC, most people in the area are members of the Qiang ethnic group and make their marginal living as farmers. Its really hard to imagine that so many of these people that we saw last summer are now dead. The area is pretty rugged and it is difficult to get around. The area under this bridge is now flooded by a large hydroelectric dam.

This part of Sichuan Province is not very densely populated, except for the villages that cling to the hillsides. The main road runs in a series of switchbacks down to the river crossing below.
